Biomedical Science

“This pathway has prepared me by showing me what I should expect when I go to a school and study what I want to learn in the future, and actually do it in a career.”

Jillian Martel, Grade 12

Today’s biomedical scientists are tackling big challenges to make the world a better place. They study how our bodies work to develop medicine, medical technology, lifestyle guides and diet to help people get healthy and stay healthy.

BHS students are taking on these real-world challenges in our PLTW Biomedical Science program. We use professional tools identical to those used in hospitals and labs, because we seek answers to the same questions as universities, hospitals and pharmaceutical developers. Our students engage in compelling, hands-on activities, working together toward a common goal of improved health for everyone.

Biomedical Science students graduate from this program with in-demand knowledge and skills that serve them and their communities for the rest of their lives. We are always learning more about how our bodies and minds work. Biomedical scientists are at the forefront of this quest for knowledge, health and happiness.

What You'll Learn

  • In Principles of Biomedical Science, students investigate concepts of biology and medicine as they explore health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases.

  • In Human Body Systems, students examine the interactions of human body systems as they explore identity, power, movement, protection, and homeostasis.

  • In Medical Interventions, students follow the life of a fictitious family as they investigate how to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease.
